Rick Howlett FILFM

Rick (Non-Solicitor) joined Vanderpump & Sykes in 2019, bringing with him over 40 years’ experience in legal finance, IT and practice management. As a member of the firm’s senior leadership team and Partnership Secretary, Rick plays a key role in the strategic and operational management of the Practice.

He has responsibility for overseeing the Accounts and Administration Departments, including HR, IT, Marketing and Compliance. With extensive experience in financial and practice management, planning, budgeting and business development, Rick advises the Partnership on commercial strategy, financial planning and opportunities for sustainable growth.

Rick studied advanced business management and accountancy and went on to achieve Fellowships of both the Institute of Legal Accounts Managers and the Institute of Legal Finance & Management. He has held senior leadership positions with prominent London law firms, including Stephenson Harwood and media law firm Stephens Innocent.

With a particular interest in technology and computer programming, Rick developed the first Law Society-approved legal aid franchise software, combining his legal sector knowledge with his technical expertise.

Rick is a former Chair and Vice Chair of the Institute of Legal Finance and Management (ILFM), and has also served on its Executive Committee. The ILFM provides qualifications, training, knowledge and support to professionals working in legal finance and practice management.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Rick played a key role in guiding the Practice through the significant operational and financial challenges faced by the legal sector. In recognition of his contribution and leadership, he was invited to join the Partnership in November 2021.
